Hello and welcome to English World. We are your radio friends Mark, along with Cheung Yun.

Time has gone by so fast.

Wait, Mark.  We just started today's program.

Of course we have.

Then, why are you saying those closing words already?

I said, Time has gone by so fast. What I meant was: Another year is passing so quickly.

            Oh, indeed.

Pretty soon, we are stepping into a new year.

Well, I can't wait.

This past year we produced many programs.

We thank you for being our faithful listeners.

And we hope your English is improving day by day.

Well, Cheung Yun, how do you plan to spend your New Year's holidays?

I plan to take a few days off to visit relatives. And you?

My children are coming back home.  So, I think I will stay put.

Any plans for New Year's Eve?

We are going to have a big family get together.

That will be a great time.

Cheung Yun, do you stay up late to see the fireworks?

Oh, I never miss it. How about you?

I can't stay awake because I usually go to bed early.

Well, try staying up this time.

New Year Traditions

Nowadays in the west, New Year's Eve is celebrated with parties

It usually lasts through the transition of the new year at midnight.

Sometimes the celebrations includes a champaigne toast,

Kissing your loved ones at the stroke of midnight.

And of course, plenty of noise and fireworks.

Did you know, since 1904, Times Square in New York City has been the hot spot for New Year's Eve celebration?

People love to gather there and watch the Waterford crystal ball drop at the stroke of midnight.

It's quite exciting.

Yes, it is.  I usually watch it on TV.

Well, since this year is ending and the new year will soon start,

Let's check out our producer Josh and see what he thinks about it.

(Open – A Day In the life of Josh)

New Years Eve.  One giant party, right?  Dancing, Eating, Drinking, Partying, that pretty much sums up 90 percent of people's evenings on December 31.

It's kind of silly when you think about it.  But whatever it is, I'm all for it!  It's going to be 2010!

As I approach the New Year I always have personal goals.  It's a brand new year, so we should have new motivation, new ideas, and new goals.

Last year my goal was to get healthier, and I feel like for once I actually accomplished my goals!  Now it's time to make some new ones.

For instance, I want to save money for a new car.  I want to eat healthier.  I want to gain more muscle.  I want to be nicer to people.  I may even want to go back to school.  And most importantly, I want to grow in my faith.

You have to have goals and passions in life, otherwise it's like your life is a waste.

So when the partying of New Years Eve is over, and the clock rolls over to 2010, what's it going to be?  Are you going to live the same way you did in 2009, or is it going to be a new person with new goals.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For westerners, New Year's resolutions are tradition.

New Year's resolutions.

It is said this tradition started more than four thousand years ago.

It's a promise to change or do something better in the new year.

And it involves serious actions to accomplish it.

It's good to hear that Josh is making goals for the new year.

Let's listen to him describes it again.

New Years Eve.  One Giant party, right?  Dancing, Eating, Drinking, Partying, that pretty much sums up 90 percent of people's evenings on December 31.   It's kind of silly when you think about it. But whatever it is, I'm all for it!  It's going to be 2010!

Here is a New Year's resolution for us.

The Bible teaches us to put off the old self.

And to get rid of the old bad behavior.

And replace it with a new self which is in Christ.

Mark, did Josh say he wants to grow in his faith in the new year?

Yes.  He did say that…and.

And what?  You doubt if he is serious about that.

No, not at all.  I just wish his new year resolution will be as successful as it was in the past year.

I agree with you.  Go grow, Josh Man.
