EW186-Christmas Gifts

Hello, and welcome to our program. This is Mark.

                And I am郭文洁。

Merry Christmas to you, Wen-J.

And Merry Christmas to you, Mark.

Isn’t this a very special time of the year?

                Indeed, it is.

The Christmas lights, the music, the food….

圣诞灯光,音乐,饣物等, and especially the gifts.

You are right. Christmas without gifts is unthinkable.

For many children, Christmas is the most wonderful day of the year.

To adults, it is a day of joy and gift-giving.

Culturally Speaking

In America, gift -giving has come to be associated with Christmas.

It came in with the introduction of St. Nicholas by the early Dutch settlers.

Also, many writers and artists like Irving, O’Henry and Dickens had glorified the gift-giving culture along with the introduction of Santa.

Now, everybody gives and receives gifts on Chrstmas.

OK, next is today’s “Everyday Dialogue”.

A couple is having a headache thinking of Christmas gifts.

Let’s listen.

Everyday Dialogue

Husband: I can’t believe Christmas is around the corner already.

Wife: I know. I still need to do my last minute shopping.

Husband: Oh, my. We were supposed to send out the gifts weeks ago.

Wife: I can’t help it. It’s hard to think of buying what to give to whom.

Husband: What happened to the gifts we received last year?

Wife: They have been sitting in the attic for a year now.

Husband: Don’t tell me you still have the fruitcake we received last

 Christmas.

----------------------------------------------

I can’t believe Christmas is around the corner already.

I know. I still need to do my last minute shopping.

Oh, my. We were supposed to send out the gifts weeks ago.

I can’t help it. It’s hard to think of buying what to give to whom.

What happened to the gifts we received last year?

They have been sitting in the attic for a year now.

Don’t tell me you still have the fruitcake we received last Christmas.

────

Wen-J, Many people are so wrapped up with shopping at this time.

They forget what Christmas is all about.

There’s meaning in giving gifts to others.

Because God has given us the greatest gift, Jesus Christ.

Let’s not forget about this.

We will review the dialogue once again.

Husband: Don’t tell me you still have the fruitcake we received from last Christmas.

Wen-J, speaking of giving gifts at Christmas, the tradition owes its origin to the Bible.

After the birth of Jesus, Bible records that three wise men from the east came to Jerusalem.

They came in search of the one who was born King of the Jews.

They saw his star in the east and came to worship him.

The star led them all the way to Bethlehem.

It stopped over the place where the child was.

They were overjoyed.

Entering the house, they saw Jesus with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.

They opened their treasures and presented him with gifts.

The gifts were of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

Their gifts were symbolic of tribute, worship and death.

Verse of the Week

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" -which means, "God with us."

Matthew 1:22,23 马太

The birth of Jesus was prophesied in the Old Testament.

God promised “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given”.

He will bring salvation to God’s people,

Redeem us from the darkness of sin.

God loves us so much that he gave his only begotten son to us.

The baby in the manger is God’s special gift,

This gift is for you and me.

Mark, is there something you are hoping to get this Christmas?

Well, I don’t really need anything. But I can’t wait to see who will give me another sweater this year.

I hope it’s not a sweater with a reindeer in the front.

I hope not. I trust my family’s judgement when buying me gifts.
