2 • New & old 2
140 New & Old (ii)
Ni, Hao, This is Mark. Sitting next to me is Xxx.
Xxx, notice anything new about me?
Mark, It seems to me that you have a new haircut.
So you noticed? I had the same old hairstyle for a long long time, I just had it trimmed short.
Well, I like it. You look 10 years younger. OK, it’s my turn. Notice anything new about me?
Mmmm, not really. Should I notice anything?
Of course, I am your “new” partner.
That’s right. And today we are bringing our listeners another lesson on
new and old.
Right on the target.
Coming up, it’s time for…
Vocabulary 123
new book 新书 used book 旧书
new items 新货 second-hand stuff 二手货
New Testament 新約圣经 Old Testament 旧約圣经
新西兰 ( Xin-xi-lan) New Zealand
(Jiu-jin-shan) San Francisco
Xxx, Why do you mention San Francisco? What does It have to do with new or old?
We call San Francisco 旧金山. In Chinese, it literally means Old Gold Mountain. During the 19th century Gold Rush period, many Chinese immigrated to San Francisco.
They were In hope of finding gold and becoming rich?
That’s right.
Now, it makes more sense to me. So San Francisco is the Old Gold Mountain! I wonder where is being considered the new Gold Mountain?
Culturally Speaking
Mark, I have heard of the Garage Sale 车库大拍卖in America. That
Doesn’t mean one is selling his garage, does it?
No, not at all. For Americans, a Garage Sale is putting out all the old and used things one doesn’t need anymore in their garage and selling them with a cheap price.
It’s a way to get rid of the junk, and earn a little money.
I see. Well, we don’t have the concept of Garage Sale. But we do
Have many 旧书 店second-hand bookstores where one can buy or even
Rent used books.
That is a strange idea for us. Who would want to buy an old, used book?
Okay, but in America, don’t you have second-hand clothes stores?
Sure.
So you think it’s strange to buy used books, but perfectly normal to wear
Someone else’s used clothes!
You are right. I never realized how contradictory that is.
接下来是 Dialogue of the Day. 还记得 John and Joani吗?
In our last program, they bumped into each other and had a discussion about cell-phones.
Let’s continue to listen to their conversation.
Dialogue
J: It’s been a while since we last met. Should we grab something to eat?
Jo: Sure. I’m hungry. Where should we go?
J: I heard there’s a new restaurant in downtown. The food is quite
interesting.
Jo: Well, I prefer to go to an old and familiar diner, like “Grandma Sally’s”.
Nothing can go wrong there.
J: Let’s not go somewhere old. We’ve “been there, done that”. Let’s try
something new.
Jo: What kind of food do they have in the new place?
J: They serve all kinds of newly invented foods with tastes and flavors that
no one has ever experienced before.
Jo: Are you kidding?
J: No, we should really try it out.
Jo: That makes it sound like we are the guinea pigs. I don’t want new food
to be tried out on me. I want to eat something that people have been
eating for thousands of years.
J: I think you’re afraid of new things.
Jo: No, I just like what’s “tried and true”.
When it comes to food, there’s always arguments.
True. Where do you think they should go, Xxx? Don’t tell me you’re thinking of a Chinese restaurant?
How did you guess that?
Well, let’s help the listeners by reviewing some phrases.
grab something to eat 找些东西来吃 , I’m hungry 饿了
new restaurant 新开的餐厅 , old diner 经营多年的老店
been there, done that 去过那儿,做了那事
Let’s listen to the first part of their dialogue.
J: It’s been a while since we last met. Should we grab something to eat?
Jo: Sure. I’m hungry. Where should we go?
J: I heard there’s a new restaurant in downtown. The food is quite interesting.
Jo: Well, I prefer to go to an old and familiar diner, like “Grandma Sally’s”. Nothing can go wrong there.
J: Let’s not go somewhere old. We’ve “been there, done that”. Let’s try
something new.
─
Talking about eating, Xxx, do you like to eat out?
Of course. But most of the time, I cook for my family. Eating out is a treat for me. How about you, Mark?
I love eating out. One of my favorite restaurants is “Connie’s”. They have the best pizza in town.
So you like pizza. Well, do you agree with what Joanie says?
You mean “eating new foods is like being someone’s guinea pig” ?
Un Mmmm
I don’t know. But let’s help our listeners review some more new words and phrases.
OK。
newly-invented 新发明的 tastes and flavors 滋味
try out 尝试看看 tried and true 信用可靠的
Jo: What kind of food do they have in the new place?
J: They serve all kinds of newly invented foods with tastes and flavors that
no one has ever experienced before.
Jo: Are you kidding?
J: No, we should really try it out.
Jo: That makes it sound like we are the guinea pigs.
I don’t want new food to be tried out on me.
I want to eat something that people have been eating for thousands of
years.
J: I think you’re afraid of new things.
Jo: No, I just like what’s “tried and true”.
Xxx, do you think they will ever agree on where to eat?
I have no idea. But what’s “tried and true” sounds good to me.
That goes without saying. Now, let’s listen to the dialogue again.
J: It’s been a while since we last met. Should we grab something to eat?
Jo: Sure. I’m hungry. Where should we go?
J: I heard there’s a new restaurant in downtown. The food is quite
interesting.

Coming back to our topic of new and old, Mark, a new appearance on the outside doesn’t necessarily means one is changed inside.
That’s true. Real change only comes from the inside. If a person has a
life-changing experience, his action will show it.
So, here is the …
Verse of the Week.
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
(English again)
Xxx, this Bible passage means a real change inside involves many aspects.
When Jesus Christ turns someone into a new person, he will get rid of the wrong doings, no more lying and cheating.
And his mind and behaviors are being transformed.
The verses remind me of the story of John Newton. Have you heard of him?
John Newton?
That’s right. In the 18th century, Newton-an Englishman-used to travel from country to country buying and selling human beings.
He bought African people, put them on ships, and sold them in other countries.
He became rich by treating people like animals and destroying their lives. And he felt no shame for all this evil.
But one day he faced a fierce storm, almost lost his life. And he began to read a book written by a Christian.
As he read, God showed Newton that his life was evil.
Newton asked God to forgive him. God then began to change Newton’s life, making him into a completely different person, a new person.
Newton stopped being involved in slavery and began fighting against slavery from then on.
He wrote ”Amazing Grace” to thank God for forgiving him and giving him a new life.
Just like John Newton, we also experience the amazing grace of
God when we received Jesus Christ in faith.
And this new life in Christ needs to grow and mature.
Mark, that’s what the verses talk about.
Exactly, taking off the old self, putting on the new self.
Well, time really flies. We have to say goodbye to our listeners.
Don’t forget, if you have any questions concerning English, write to us.
Thank you for spending time with us today.
Until next time. Zai-Jian.

So, Mark, with the new and short hairstyle, you must feel much lighter.
But I feel like an inch shorter. However, I use less shampoo nowadays.
That’s economical….
