EW 157—Cards and words卡片与问候

English is a very expressive language.

                英语是一个很可以活泼表现的语讠。

You will often hear westerners say things like “Thank you & Excuse me”.

                你常会听到外国人說Thank you 谢谢 或是 Excuse me 对不起.

And we often use the magic word “Please”.

                他们也常常会說 “Please 请” 这个万能话。

We also like to write notes and send cards to people.

                外国人也很喜欢写短信或是寄卡片给人.

In the West, you can buy all kinds of cards in the bookstore, card store, or drug store.

                在外国，你可以在书局，卡片专卖店或是药房买到各式各樣的卡片。

Even supermarkets sell cards.

                甚至杂货店裡也卖卡片。

Cards are given and received everywhere.

                无论何处都有人寄卡片和收卡片。

Cheung Yun do you like to buy and send cards?

 Sure. 我喜欢买卡片寄卡片 But a lot of time I don’t know what to write.

                但是很多时候我不知道要在卡片裡写什麼。

Let’s say you have received a gift from someone.

                OK，就說我收到了某人给我的礼物。

You are struggling with what to write in the thank you card.

                我不知道要在答谢卡裡写些什麼.

Here is a simple example.

                这裡有个简单的例子。

“Thank you for the beautiful gift. I am very grateful!”

可以写：“Thank you for the beautiful gift. 谢谢你赠与的美好礼物。“ I am very grateful!” 我感激不尽。

Take another example.

再来举一个例子，

You were invited to a dinner party.

                我被邀请去参加一个晚宴。

Afterwards, you can send a card like this:

                事后，可以寄谢卡这樣写著：

“Thank you for inviting me to your home. The dinner was delicious! Many thanks!”

Thank you for inviting me to your home.感谢你邀请我到你家作客。The dinner was delicious! 晚餐非常的美味。Many thanks衷心感谢。

 

 

Culturally Speaking 话說文化   In the west, Holiday cards are very popular.  在西方，节期卡片向来非常流行。 Here are the most popular ones:  最受欢迎的有底下好几种： In December, we send out Christmas cards.  在12月时，我们会寄圣诞卡。 In early spring, we send out Easter cards.  在春天来临时，我们会寄复活节卡。 In November, we send out Thanksgiving cards.  在11月时，我们会寄感恩节卡。 In May, we send out Mother’s day cards.  在5月时，我们会寄母亲卡。 Also, on Feb. 14th, it’s traditional for a couple to give each other Valentine cards.  在2月14日那天，按著传统恋人们会互寄情人卡。

 

Do you know, Cheung Yun nowadays cards not only just have words.

                是阿，今日的卡片不单只有文字而已。

There are cards that even sing to you when you open them.

                有些卡片你打开时还会唱歌呢！像生日卡片Like Happy Birthday card.

Yes. （humming）That always gives people big surprises.

                当人收到这樣的卡片，都会非常的惊喜的。

Not to mention there are many occasions to celebrate.

                不用說了，值得庆祝的日子多的是。

For example, Wedding, Graduation, Anniversary

                比如說，结婚，毕业，结婚週年…

And New-Born baby or Shower..etc.

                还有婴孩出生，或是为即将来到的孩子举行的送礼会等等

Congratulation cards are always a big sell.

                各式各樣的贺卡永远都是大卖，畅销得很。

A: You know our co-worker Edna, don’t you?

B: Yes, I heard that she has decided to retire.

A: Can you imagine this? She has offered 25 years of service here.

B: That’s a very long time.

A: I’m so used to having her here everyday, it’s hard to see her leave.

B: Well, you should wish her happy retirement.

A: I know. But I’m gonna miss her terribly.

 

好，收音机旁的朋友，听了以上会话后，我们来了解他们說的是什麼。

 

 You know our co-worker Edna, don’t you?

                你认识我们的同事Edna吧？

 Yes, I heard that she has decided to retire.

                认识。我听說她決定要退休了。

Decide 決定 Retire 退休

 Can you imagine this? She has offered 25 years of service here.

                你能想像吗？她在这儿已经服务有25年之久了。

Offer service 提供服务，事奉

That’s a very long time.

                那可是很长的一段时间。

 I’m so used to having her here everyday, it’s hard to see her leave.

                我已经习惯每天有她在这儿。她要离开我可舍不得。

Be used to习惯， 惯於 He is used to staying here. 他对呆在这儿已经习惯了。

 Well, you should wish her happy retirement.

                你应该祝福她快乐退休阿！

 I know. But I’m gonna miss her terribly.

                我明白。但是我一定会非常想念她的。

                Yes. 我相信他们会送卡给Edna，每个人在上头签写名字。

Maybe it’s a goodbye card.

也许会是一张道別卡。

Or a happy retirement card.

                或者是快乐退休卡。

Talking about cards, cards are not only for happy occasions, but also for sad occasions.

                卡片不单单只为了快乐的时期，忧伤的时刻也可以写卡片。

When someone is sick, you can send a get-well card.

                当有人生病了，你可以寄 早日康复卡。

When someone is moving away, you give good bye card.

                当有人要搬家了，你可以寄 道別卡。

If someone has lost a family member, there are special cards to comfort them.

                有人家裡有了丧事，也有特別的卡片可以安慰他们。

You can write something like this:

你可以在卡片上写这樣的话：

“In this time of grieving, May God comfort you and give you peace.”

‘In this time of grieving, 在这段哀痛悲伤之时，

May God comfort you and give you peace.” 愿神安慰你，赐你平安。

You can also include one Bible verse.

                同时你也可以附上一两节圣经经文。

Cards are for all seasons and all kinds of situation.

                无论是什麼时期或情況，卡片都可以派上用场。

And you can pick the ones that express your emotions and feelings the best.

                你可以选最能表达你的感受和情感的卡片送给人。

It’s easy to love with just words and tongue.

只用讠语和舌头来爱是轻而易举的。

It’s easy to send someone a card with pretty words inside.

                给某人寄张卡片，写些好听的话並不是难事。

But it’s not enough.

                但是光这樣做，还是不夠。

There is a saying in English “Talk is cheap”.

                英语裡有谚语說：Talk is cheap也就是我们所谓的"空口說白话"。

It means that saying something nice costs very little.

                意思是指光說好话，不需要付什麼代价。

If someone is cold and I say to him, “Keep warm”,

                如果有人衣不蔽体了，而我只对他說"別著涼了".

If sounds nice but what good does it do that person?

                听来好听，但是对那人有什麼益处呢？

That’s just loving with words or tongue.

                那就是只在讠语和舌头上相爱。

Real love would be sharing my coat with that person.

                真实的爱，乃是把我的外套给那个人穿。

True love requires actions.

                真实的爱需要有行动。

This is how God loves us.

                神对我们的爱正是这樣。

God doesn’t just say to us, “I love you.”

                祂不光是說，我爱你。

God gave us his Son Jesus Christ.

                祂把自己独生爱子耶稣基督给了我们

This is love in actions and in truth.

                这是以行为和诚实来爱人。

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue

                小子们哪，我们相爱，不要只在讠语和舌头上，

But with actions and in truth.

                总要在行为和诚实上。
