Hi, this is your friend Mark.

                And I am Cheung Yun

It’s good to have you with us today.

In order to bring this program to you, we have many co-workers working along with us.

You might not hear their voices, but they are the force behind the scene.

For Example, Bonnie, John, Ken…

                And also Lai-sin, and Wai-Wai…

Now that you mention it, , how is Wai-Wai? I haven’t seen her since she left here.

Oh, Didn’t you know? She got married a month ago.

Really? That’s wonderful. Who is the lucky guy?

                His name is Francis. Francis.

Did you go to the wedding ceremony?

Did they have a church wedding or a civil wedding?

They had a church wedding. The pastor from their church officiated the wedding.

Culturally Speaking

In western culture, there is a rehearsal of the wedding the night before so that everyone knows the procedure and knows their cues.

The person who officiates the wedding can be a minister, a priest, a rabbi, or a judge. They must be present in order for the wedding to be legal.

Cheung Yun how is the western wedding custom different from the Chinese one?

Well, for very traditional wedding, we have someone who has a high standing in the community to preside the wedding.

Someone who has a high standing in the community to preside the wedding?

Right. And there are always two introducers present .

What do you mean introducers?

In the past they were the match makers, but today it’s just a formality.

That’s interesting.

And usually the guests will talk loudly and make a lot of noise because it’s such a joyous occasion.

Really? That’s totally the opposite from a western wedding.

                I know.

Talking about wedding, the Bible tells us Jesus once was invited to a wedding.

While the celebration was still going on, they ran out of wine.

Jesus’ mother told Jesus they were out of wine.

Jesus told the servants to fill six stone jars with water.

And he told them to draw some out take it to the master of the banquet.

The master of the banquet tasted it.

Then he called the groom aside and asked him why he saved the best wine until then.

Jesus had changed the water into wine.

This was the very first miracle Jesus performed on earth.

It’s recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 2.

Mark, wasn’t that marvelous?

Yes, it was. Jesus is God and he did everything good.

The miracle revealed his power and glory.

Likewise, in the feast of life, we are often out of wine.

But Jesus brings us new vitality in life.

Mark, I heard that in the west, the bride’s family is responsible for the entire wedding including the reception.

That’s right.

That’s strange. We have it the other way around.

Are you saying the groom’s family pays for all the wedding expense?

Yes. Think about it. You have a wife to take care of you and cook for you and bear your surname. And her family has to pay the expense to marry her off?

That’s our custom. I’m sure glad I was in the west when I got married.

But don’t forget. You have to marry off your daughter someday.

Oh, I forgot about that.
