144 Health (ii)

Ni-Hao, This is Mark. Welcome to English World.

In our last program, we talked about something that’s important to everyone.

Do you remember the saying from last time?

What is better than wealth?

The answer is Health.

Health is better than wealth.

When people in the west make a toast, they often say—“To your health and happiness.”

How about Chinese people, Cheung Yun?

You know what? Most of the Chinese people would wish each other to be wealthy.

Really? Why is that?

I think it’s because life is hard for most of the people.

I still think health is better than wealth.

                I agree with you.

OK, Following is “Everyday Dialogue”.

Grandma Mae is talking with her grandson.

Let’s listen to their conversation.

Dialogue

Grandma: You need to eat some fruit. How about a pear?

Grandson: But I don’t like pears.

Grandma: Why don’t you like pears?

Grandson: They're icky.

Grandma: Pears are sweet and good for your health.

Grandson: Unhhh...thank you, but no.

Grandma: Well then, how about an apple?

Grandson: OK, I’ll have one.

Grandma: Good boy. There’s a saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

Grandson: Really? I’ll have two.

-------------------

Mark, do you like to eat fruit?

Of course, I love oranges, grapefruits, and apples.

How about you, Cheung Yun?

I like guava, dragon eyes, and lizhi.

What are they?

They are fruits from Asia. guava芭乐 dragon eyes 龙眼 lizhi荔枝

You eat dragon eyes?

It’s Yummy.

Enough for the foreign fruits. Let’s come back to pears and apples please.

Let's review the conversation above.

Grandma: You need to eat some fruit. How about a pear?

Grandson: But I don’t like pears.

Grandma: Why don’t you like pears?

                Grandson: They're icky.

Grandma: Pears are sweet and good for your health.

Grandson: Unhhh... Thank you, but no.

Grandma: Well then, how about an apple?

                Grandson: OK, I’ll have one.

Grandma: Good boy. There’s a saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

KEEP AWAY 远离

                Grandson: Really? I’ll have two.

Grammar Snapshot

“An”(a-n) is used before all words beginning with a vowel sound or a silent h.

For example, 举例来說 the vowels are A, E, I, O, U 母音或元音是A E I O U

an apple一颗苹果, an elephant一头大象﹐ an eagle一只老鹰 an eye一个眼睛

an orange一个柳丁 an old castle一间古城堡 an umbrella一只雨伞 an hour一小时

Next time when you come across words that start with a vowel sound, don’t forget to use “an” instead of “a”.

Once again, let’s listen to the conversation between Grandma Mae and Grandson Stephen.

Grandson: Really? I’ll have two.
