When does the new Chinese year begin ?

Oh,农历新年在何时？Actually, we already celebrated the Chinese lunar new year. 

You mean I missed out on the dragon dance?

Yes, 你错过了舞龙的表演。

And I missed out the delicious Chinese food?

That’s right. 你也错过好吃的过年菜。  

What about the red envelopes with lucky money inside?

        你說红包？You missed out on that too.

Too bad.

Talking about celebration, Mark, When is your birthday party你的生日庆祝会是哪一天?

It was last week on Wednesday.

Oh, no! I totally forgot about it. 我完全给忘了。

That’s all right. But you missed out on my famous apple pie. 

        Too bad.   哎，我错过你拿手的苹果派。

Cheung Yun with more than 4000 years of history, China is quite old.

对阿, 我们有将近五千年的悠久文化传统 and we are proud of our cultural heritage and traditions.。

On the other hand, with only over 200 years of history, the United States is relatively young and new.

Indeed. 美国只有两百多年的历史，真是年轻阿。Mark, why is that many people consider the USA a “melting pot”?为什麼有人称美国是个大熔炉？

That’s a good question.  It’s time for----

 

Cultually Speaking 话說文化

A melting pot is a soup made up of many different ingredients that have been blended together.

大锅杂烩是把许多不同的材料放进一大锅內所煮出来的好汤

America is like a “melting pot” into which immigrants from all around the world have come together, blending together their cultures and traditions.

美国被认为是大熔炉，因为它有从世界各地来的移民。这些人把他们的文化和传统都带进了美国。

Although many cultures blend together, each culture in the America melting pot still retain its distinct flavor.

虽然融入了许多不同的文化，在美国大熔炉內各国文化仍然保有它独特的风格。

 

 

Mark, talking about distinct flavor of each culture, I think of all the wonderful cuisine.  嗯，我想到美国有从各国来的佳餚美饣。

That’s right. We have Indian food, Mexican food, Thai food, Italian food, and not to mention Chinese food.

有这麼多种各国的菜，真令人羨慕 You can taste all kinds of food from around the world.

Yes. Remember our friends John and Joani?

        Yes。这两位朋友上星期在讨论要上哪儿吃饭。

John would like to try a new restaurant.

        John想要试试一家新餐厅。

But Joani prefers an old and familiar place.

        Joani卻想去一家她所熟悉经营多年的老店。

Let’s find out as we listen to their conversation.

        让我们继续听他们的对话。

 

Dialogue

Jo: What kind of food do they have in the new restaurant?

J:  They serve all kinds of newly invented foods with tastes and flavors that

      no one has ever experienced before.

Jo:  Are you kidding?

J:  No, we should really try it out.

Jo: That makes it sound like we are the guinea pigs. I don’t want new food 

      to be tried out on me.

J:  You want to eat old food?

Jo: No, not food that’s old. I want to eat something that people have been     

      eating for thousands of years.

J:  I think you’re afraid of new things.

Jo: No, I just like what’s “tried and true”.

 

OK, let’s review what we have heard.

What kind   哪一种，哪一樣 ， all kinds  各式各樣  

J:   They serve all kinds of newly invented foods with tastes and flavors that

Jo:  Are you kidding?

你是当真的，不是开玩笑？

J:  No, we should really try it out.

    当然不是玩笑，我们真的该试试那儿。

Jo: That makes it sound like we are the guinea pigs.

    那我们岂不像供人实验的试验品了。

guinea pigs  供医学生物实验用的天笁鼠，供实验的试验品  

       I don’t want new food to be tried out on me.

    我可不要作新饣品的试尝者。

J:  You want to eat old food?

        那你想吃煮得很老的菜了。

Jo: No, not food that’s old.  I want to eat something that people have been            

      eating for thousands of years.

        才不。我不是要吃煮得太老的饣物。我要吃那种千百年来就有人吃的东西。

J:  I think you’re afraid of new things.

     我看你是害怕尝试新事物。

Jo: No, I just like what’s “tried and true”.

     不尽然。我只是喜欢吃经过多次试验后，可以安心饣用的可靠饣物。

tried and true  经考验证明是可信可靠的

 

 

Grammar Snapshot 语法知多少                  

 

In the phrase “tried and true”, tried (t-r-I-e-d) is an adjective, not the past    tense of try. 

在”tried and true” 字词裡，tried 是用来作形容词，並不是try尝试这个动词的过去式。

For example:   举例来說

To be tried out on somebody      在某人身上作试验。             

This has been tried and tested many times. 这个曾经多次被试验过。

 

In the above, tried is used as a verb。 以上的tried 作为动词使用

But listen to “tried” as an adjective.

但是听听以下tried 为形容词的例子：

tried   试验过的，可信赖的   ，   a tried method    经过试验过的方法

a “tried and true” friend  一个忠实可靠的朋友         

a “tried and true” faith   一份熬鍊过的信心

 

 

Cheung Yun do you think they will ever agree on where to eat?

Maybe not.  他们可能不能同意去哪儿吃。

But what’s “tried and true” sounds good to me.

是阿，That goes without saying.每个人都想吃得安心。 

But we still need creative cooks to come up with new dishes.

        但我们还是需要有创意的廚师来设计新菜餚。

Yes. And brave people who are willing to try them.

        也需要有勇气的人愿意尝试新饣物。Mark, are you one of the brave ones?

Don’t tell me you are going to cook new things for me to try?

        That’s a possibility.

Talking about food, Mark, Everyday I am thinking of what to cook for my family. 每天我都在想，今天要为家人作什麼菜。

 And everyday I am thinking of what the next meal will be.

        啊？你每天都在想下一餐要吃什麼。

Doesn’t matter what we eat or how much we eat , we still get hungry.

        That’s true. 不论我们吃什麼或是吃多少，我们都还是会再饿。        

This fact reminds me of what Jesus teaches us.

        的确。我也想到耶稣对我们的教导。

“Not to be so concerned about the perishable things like food.

        不要为那必坏的饣物劳力，

But spend energy seeking the eternal life that he can give us.”

        要为那存到永生的饣物劳力，就是人子要赐给你们的。

In this verse, Jesus is referring to our spiritual situation.

        在这经文裡，耶稣指的，是我们的属灵景況。

There’s an emptiness inside us.

        在我们內心深处，有一个极大的空虛感。

We are hungry and thirsty spiritually.

        我们属灵上觉得又饿又渴。

But Jesus is the bread that comes down from heaven.

        但耶稣是那从天上降下的生命粮。

Whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life.

        凡相信祂的人必得到永生。

This is the good news for the whole world.

        这是给全世界的好消息。

        Mark, you and I have received this bread of life.

Yes. And also many Christians throughout the generations. We can all testify that this is “tried and true”.

世代以来，基督信徒都能见证这信仰是经过熬鍊，也是真实可靠的。
