Ni Hao! This is Mark. Welcome to English World!
Cheung Yun how come it’s you sitting next to me? Where is Cathy?
Don’t you remember? Cathy has decided to go back to her hometown to teach. Cathy
Oh, that’s right!
You are stuck with me from now on. Well, I am new, but you are an old hand at doing this show.
Don’t you worry. We will have fun teaching English and our listeners will
have fun learning.
Sounds great! Let’s begin.

Cheung Yun not that old though. I have known you for only three years.
Are you saying, I am kind of like a new friend to you?
Yes. But we do have a saying: “Make new friends and keep the old…”
I know this saying. I can even sing it. “Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver, and the other gold.”
Where did you learn that? you are right with the saying:
Make new friends
and Keep the old, 也不忘記老朋友
One is silver,
and the other gold.
Both old and new friends are precious.
So, Mark, please tell me, am I silver or gold to you?

Mark, do you know that right now in China, a lot of neighborhoods are going through new transition?
Out with the old, in with the new.
That’s right. out with the old homes, old buildings and one-story houses.
In with the new and tall buldings and skyscrapers.
Also, out with the old public bath places.
In with the new public shower rooms? You must be kidding.
Well, not everybody likes new things., and everyone still has old habits.
True. I like to go to bed early, and wake up early.
I like to stay up late and sleep late.
Now, let’s listen to the following dialogue between two friends John and Joani.
Dialogue
J: Notice anything new about me?
Jo: Hmmm, same old eyes, same old nose, same old face. No, looks like the same old you.
J: You didn’t notice my new cell-phone? It’s really cool.
Jo: I don’t like cell-phones.
J: You’re just old-fashioned. Why don’t you get one?
Jo: When I was a child, there was a crazy man who used to walk in the street talking to himself. Now everyone walks in the street talking to themselves.
J: I think you’re just afraid of new things.
Jo: No, I just prefer old things. That’s why I like you.
Cheung Yun it sounds like these two people have known each other for some time.
In the very beginning of their conversation, John asked Joani a question.
J: Notice anything new about me?
Jo: Hmmm, same old eyes, same old nose, same old face. No, looks like the same old you.
J: You didn’t notice my new cell-phone? It’s really cool.
Jo: I don’t like cell-phones.
Now, Cheung Yun Did I heard you say “Da-Ge-Da”? What’s that?
喔,Da-Ge-Da. It’s what we call “cell-phone”. The name comes from the fact that it used to be only the big and mean gangsters who used cell-phones. Who would have thought that nowadays almost everyone will have one?
Yes, but It wasn’t until recently that I started to use a cell-phone. I bought it for my daughter who is in college, so that she can call me anytime she wants.
You are a wonderful dad.
Going back to the dialogue, What is Joani’s attitude towards the cell-phone? Let’s listen again.
───
Mark, Joani doesn’t like cell-phone. Why is that ?
I think she probably was brought up in the big city. That explains why she had seen the crazy man talking to himself.
And I think she really misses the old times when people got to talk face to face with each other.
On the other hand, John must enjoy the convenience of the Da-Ge-Da.
He likes up-to-date things, for sure. What about you, Mark?
I enjoy talking with my daughter when she calls, but I don’t like people talking so loud on the cell-phone in the buses or public places. It seems like they want to share with the whole world their conversations.
I agree with you totally.
OK,Let’s listen to the dialogue once again with the normal speed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cheung Yun today we talked a lot about new and old. Would you say in this new year, you are going to try some new things?
Definitely. How about you, Mark? Are you going to try sushi and fish head? Sushi?
No, thank you. I prefer old and familiar things. But that doesn’t mean I can’t be changed. In fact, I am being renewed inside everyday.
Your mind and heart are being changed everyday?
Yes, by reading God’s Words and drawing near to God, Jesus is changing me day by day.
That’s right. Like Paul had said: “Although outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
Indeed. And this surpassing power is from God, not from us.
Mark, With this power inside us, everything is possible, wouldn’t you say?
Yes, and here is…
Verse of the Week.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come !
From II Corinthians 5:17
(English again)
Cheung Yun this verse talked about Christ turning someone into a new person. I can think of many people whose lives were changed because of Jesus’s dying on the cross.
Yes, including you and me.
Whoever received Jesus Christ in faith, will have this new life, becoming a new creation.
Out with the old, in with the new. Today God is still doing his work in our lives.
That’s for sure.
It’s time to wrap up. Mark, thank you for being so kind to your new partner.

Now, Mark, are you sure you don’t want to try sushi and fish heads? It’s delicious.
Don’t mention it again. I don’t understand how can you eat something like that. I can’t stand two fish eyes starring at me when I eat…
